The Top Five EMR Systems You Need to Know

As a physician working locum tenens, you get to enjoy things like interesting travel opportunities and the ability to gain experience in a variety of clinical settings. However, with these perks comes the challenge of familiarizing yourself with several different facilities and a variety of electronic medical record (EMR) software.

According to an August report from Medscape, the top five most widely used EMR systems in 2016 are Epic, Cerner, eClinicalWorks, NextGen, and Meditech.

To many physicians, the use of EMR systems may seem like a new phenomenon that has taken the healthcare world by storm. However, major healthcare facilities, like The Mayo Clinic, began using EMR programs in the early 1960s, and the EMRs that we see today first appeared in 1972.

Each year, more hospitals are moving further away from paper charting and traditional order entry systems and using EMR programs for their daily workflow and patient care management. Benefits of using EMR’s include minimizing the frequency of errors, maximizing cost-efficiency, and better coordination between providers.

While nearly all facilities will offer some sort of EMR training prior to your first day on assignment, as a locum tenens physician, it is important to familiarize yourself with as many EMR systems as you can ahead of time. Doing so can make the transition into your next assignment go smoothly and make you a more competitive candidate for future assignments.

Unfortunately, EMR tutorials are generally not available from the software companies unless you’re a customer, but thanks to the kindness of others who have been in your shoes, you can find helpful tutorial videos online for programs like Cerner, eClinicalWorks, NextGen, and Meditech. If you’d rather read a book, Electronic Health Records for Dummies gives a great overview of different EMR systems.

As you become more familiar with different EMR systems, you can feel confident heading into your next assignment. Are you ready to broaden your horizon and take on a new challenge? Check out our hottest locum tenens jobs, here.
