Top 5 mental health blogs of 2019As a locum tenens doctor, you’re constantly traveling, adjusting to unfamiliar environments, and interacting with new people. That’s on top of the high-stress that already exists in your job. It can be hectic, that’s for sure.

We want to ensure locums physicians are always prepared with the best resources – it’s imperative that you have the support and knowledge you need to thrive in your profession! Plus, you can benefit by staying up to date on the world of mental health. That's why we compiled our five favorite mental health blogs. We highly recommend you add these to your regular reading rotation:

  1. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is a grassroots organization with a community of mental health patients and advocates who are dedicated to building better lives for Americans affected by mental illness. Their blog tackles a wide range of mental health topics, and because it’s aimed towards the general audience you get stories and insights on how mental illness impacts people from all walks of life.

  2. Real Psychiatry is a blog by a psychiatrist – George Dawson, MD, DFAPA – for psychiatrists. Drawing on his more than thirty years of experience, Dr. Dawson attempts to correct the misconceptions about psychiatry that appear in the media. His goal? "To have quality medical care widely available and scientifically based.” Real Psychiatry also provides analysis of the biases that affect medical decision making in all specialties. 

  3. MQ – which stands for Mental Health and the Quality of Life – is the first major mental health research charity. They aim to create a world where mental illness is understood, effectively treated, and ultimately prevented through research. They share a diverse range of articles on their blog including personal stories, mental health tactics in schools, how-to's for doctors treating mental health concerns, and other science- and research-based articles.

  4. You may be familiar with Psychiatric Times, but if you're not it's a must-read. Psych Times is geared towards anyone involved in the profession of psychiatry and clinical psychology and the publication does a great job offering industry news and knowledge. It also provides great advice for physicians that ranges from business practice insights to dealing with physician burnout.

  5. The official blog of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) is another top mental health publication for psychiatrists and clinical psychologists. It provides a wide variety of research-based content that focuses on topics including addiction, depression and anxiety,  sleep disorders, and even hoarding and gambling addictions.
